B.A.S.S. names 2019 Bassmaster High School All-State Fishing Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Sixty-two outstanding high school anglers from across the country have been named to the 2019 Bassmaster High School All-State Fishing Team presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors.

The students were selected for the honor based on their success in bass tournament competition, academic achievement and leadership in conservation and community service.

“The Bassmaster High School All-American program recognizes the best young anglers in the nation,” said Bruce Akin, B.A.S.S. CEO. “These student athletes are at the top of our sport both with their tournament success and academic achievements. We are proud to honor their accomplishments on a national level.” read more...

The Scruffy City and B.A.S.S. Strong

There were two big winners at last week’s Bassmaster Classic — the new champion, Ott DeFoe, and Knoxville, Tenn., the host city.

As you know by now, DeFoe beat a strong field of 52 anglers, walking away with the trophy and $300,000. Knoxville garnered a significant payoff as well, hauling in massive kudos from fishing fans, the media and my colleagues here at B.A.S.S. for its beauty, vibrant downtown and the general friendliness all encountered.

But it wasn’t always so for this Southern Appalachian city. As a native son of Knoxville, I appreciate just how far it has come in the past few decades.

The Knoxville of my youth was a bit insecure about how it was viewed by the outside world. Located at the headwaters of the Tennessee River, with the Smoky Mountains to the east and the Cumberland Plateau to the west, the town was somewhat geographically isolated. Some may have considered us provincial — hillbillies perhaps — dressed in overalls and listening to bluegrass music. That was the stereotype, at least.

Two writers who visited Knoxville, and wrote negatively about it, actually did the town a favor.

In 1947, author John Gunther referred to Knoxville as “America’s ugliest city” in his book Inside USA. Knoxvillians were offended, but Gunther’s words motivated residents and organizations to start planting trees — red buds and dogwoods — and flowering plants. In 1955, the Knoxville Garden Club took up the torch and laid the foundation for what is now 60 miles of dogwood trails and an annual Dogwood Arts Festival that energizes the city each spring with blooms and thousands of visitors.

Falcon Bass Boats adds Brandon Cobb to pro team

Newberry, S.C. – Premium South Carolina manufacturer Falcon Bass Boats announces the addition of another top flight pro to their pro team. Brandon Cobb, from nearby Greenwood, S.C., has made the flight to Newberry and will be competing in his first year as a Bassmaster Elite Series pro from the Falcon F205, equipped with a new Mercury 250PROXS Four-Stroke.

Any fan who has followed the sport of bass fishing closely over the past several years has likely come across Cobb’s exploits. In his five-year career, he has become known largely because of his four consecutive top 10 finishes in his four Forrest Wood Cup appearances from 2015 to 2018. However, that’s not to say that he only performs in championship events; in his FLW career, Cobb has amassed over $400,000 in earnings, two wins and 32 other top 10s.....read more
