Wildlife Forever Celebrates Invasive Species Awareness Week

For Immediate Release:
Contact: Dane Huinker: DHuinker@WildlifeForever.org

White Bear Lake, MN –  Wildlife Forever, a nationwide leader in invasive species outreach and education, is joining others from around the country to celebrate National Invasive Species Awareness Week (NISAW). NISAW was created to raise awareness and identify solutions to invasive species issues at the local, state and national levels.

It is estimated that economic damages associated with invasive species has reached $120 billion dollars per year for the US. These invaders threaten fish and wildlife, clog intake pipes in public utility operations, and negatively impact property values. Outreach and education to policy makers and the public is key to preventing the spread of invasive species.

Since 2006, Wildlife Forever’s invasive species outreach and education programs have made more than 2 billion impressions. The science-supported and clear best management practices (BMPs) of the Clean Drain Dry Initiative® empower users to prevent the spread of invasive species.

For the last 14 years, Wildlife Forever has led a coalition of local and national partners to implement and deliver on-the-ground education and outreach programs across the United States.  Prompts are strategically placed online, in bait shops, at convenience stores, along the highway, in magazines, and on the television to remind users before they reach the water. At the access, signage and tools engage users, support Clean Drain Dry actions and empower them to prevent the movement of invasive species.

“Invasive species threaten our lakes, streams and public access to outdoor recreation. Wildlife Forever is proud to be participating in National Invasive Species Awareness Week and encourages State and Federal leadership to prioritize prevention education,” said President and CEO Pat Conzemius.

February 24th-28th is just part one of NISAW, leaders in the fight against invasive species are meeting with leaders in Washington D.C. to share the importance of preventing invasive species. The public is urged to celebrate NISAW by reaching out to their local leaders and urging them to protect our land and waters.

The Wildlife Forever Clean Drain Dry Initiative® is the national campaign to educate outdoor recreational users on how to prevent the spread of invasive species. Strategic communications, marketing, outreach and educational services provide access to consistent messaging and tailored AIS prevention planning. TIME FOR A TURN-AROUND

Anglers, conservationists and outdoors people have been fighting a back-and-forth battle over whether a sulfide-ore copper mine should be allowed within the watershed that feeds America's most visited wilderness area - the Boundary Waters.

Over the past few months, the news has been mostly bad. The cancellation of an important study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture allowed the mining company to move forward and the situation was looking grim.

Now there is good news on the horizon.

A bill has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives that would protect the scenic beauty and unparalleled fishing of this pristine public wilderness. Officially known as The Boundary Waters Wilderness Protection and Pollution Prevention Act, this bill would effectively impose a ban on mineral withdrawals within and near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

The fight to preserve the Boundary Waters has been going on for years. Now, a legislative solution to end this fight seems to be a possibility.

Tell your Representative that you support protecting the Boundary Waters and ask them to support this important legislation.
